VA Disability for National Guard & Reserve

ARE YOU DISABLED DUE TO YOUR SERVICE IN THE NATIONAL GUARD?

Members of the National Guard and Reserve are eligible for VA disability benefits just like members of the U.S. Army and other military branches. These benefits include disability benefits for service-connected disabilities. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides VA disability to National Guard members and reserve members.

TYPES OF DISABILITY BENEFITS FOR NATIONAL GUARD & RESERVE

Veterans who have been determined to be at least 10% disabled from an injury or disease that was sustained while serving on active duty are eligible to receive disability compensation. This type of compensation is a monthly, tax-free benefit awarded to veterans for their service to the United States. It can also be awarded to veterans whose pre-existing medical conditions were made worse while on active duty, as well as veterans who developed a disease or sustained an injury while training for active duty.

In addition, the VA compensates veterans who suffer from disabilities that occurred from stroke, heart attack, or injury while training on inactive duty. For certain veterans, the VA will also provide services such as education, vocational counseling, and job-search assistance if the veteran suffers from a service-connected injury or illness.

APPLYING FOR VA DISABILITY AS A NATIONAL GUARDSMAN

Members of the National Guard and Reserve can apply for VA benefits online or in person at their VA office in their area. The process is detailed and often confusing, which is why you are encouraged to hire an agent or lawyer to help you through the process. Professional assistance can help ensure that your application is accepted and that you are granted the benefits that you need after suffering from disability due to your service in the U.S. National Guard or Reserve.
